How to spend a day in Wellfleet, MA?

There is a reason Wellfleet is known as the soul of Cape Cod. Tucked between the dramatic, wave-swept cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil, oyster-rich waters of Wellfleet Harbor, our town offers a quintessential New England escape.

When you stay at The Southfleet, you are perfectly positioned right on the Route 6 corridor, placing the best of the Outer Cape right at your doorstep. Whether you are looking to surf heavy ocean swells, kayak peaceful freshwater kettle ponds, or eat world-class oysters right where they were harvested, this step-by-step local guide ensures you will maximize every minute of your coastal getaway.

7:30 AM – Take in the Views at Marconi Beach

Before the crowds arrive, make your way to Marconi Beach, a stunning jewel of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Famous for its soaring glacial sand dunes and sweeping Atlantic views, it is a prime spot for broad beach walks, surfing, and spotting local gray seals bobbing in the surf.

Local Tip: Check out the nearby Marconi Wireless Station site while you are there to see where the first transatlantic wireless message was sent from the United States to Europe.

8:30 AM - Coffee & Pastries at The Flying Fish

Kick off your morning by driving just minutes from The Southfleet into the heart of town to visit The Flying Fish. This beloved, low-key local spot serves up fantastic house-baked pastries, creative breakfast sandwiches, and robust espresso drinks. Grab a seat on their outdoor deck to map out your day under the shade of the pines.

7

10:30 AM – Hike the Great Island Trail

If you love nature, the Great Island Trail is a mandatory Cape Cod experience. This pristine, protected peninsula separates Wellfleet Harbor from Cape Cod Bay. The trail guides you through pitch pine forests, expansive salt marshes, and windswept sand spits where the only sounds are the crying gulls and crashing waves.

7

1:00 PM – Casual Pier-Side Lunch at Mac's On the Pier

After your hike, head straight down to the Wellfleet Town Pier for a classic lunch at Mac's On the Pier. Walk right up to their ordering window, order a basket of whole-belly fried clams or a fresh lobster roll, and claim a beachside picnic table. You will look right across the harbor toward the very flats where Wellfleet’s world-famous oysters are harvested.

Drop by the historic Frying Pan Gallery right on the pier to admire marine-inspired steel sculptures created by local Cape Cod artists.

2:30 PM – Explore Main Street Galleries and Art Shacks

Wellfleet has been a thriving haven for artists, writers, and makers for over a century. Spend your afternoon wandering the vibrant commercial hub along Main Street and Commercial Street.

Browse the independent boutiques, pottery shops, and bookstores tucked inside beautifully preserved 19th-century sea captains' homes.

7

4:00 PM – Unwind at Gull Pond

Take a quick detour to Gull Pond. One of Wellfleet’s freshwater kettle ponds—formed by melting glaciers thousands of years ago—with crystal-clear water it is a hidden gem nested deep within the pine woods.

7

6:00 PM – Sunset Seafood Dinner at The Bookstore Restaurant

As the sun begins to dip, secure a table on the deck at The Bookstore Restaurant. Order a dozen raw Wellfleet oysters on the half-shell paired with a signature cocktail to cap off your day by the water.

7

8:15 PM – Catch a Double Feature at the Wellfleet Drive-In

You cannot visit the Outer Cape without experiencing the legendary Wellfleet Drive-In Theater. Built in 1957, it is one of the very last remaining operational drive-in theaters in the country. Pull your car into the lot, tune your radio to the station, grab some popcorn from the retro snack bar, and enjoy a first-run Hollywood double feature under a canopy of stars.

7

11:30 PM – A Short Drive Back to Your Bed

When the final credits roll, you will avoid the long, exhausting drives back up the Cape. The Southfleet is located just 5 minutes down Route 6 from the drive-in, meaning you can head straight to your room, collapse into a comfortable bed, and rest up for another perfect Cape Cod day.
