Wellfleet’s Banana Pioneer: The Story of Lorenzo Dow Baker
When you think of bananas, Wellfleet probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind. But believe it or not, the modern banana trade in the United States has deep roots right here in our seaside town, thanks to one remarkable man: Lorenzo Dow Baker.
Born in 1840, Lorenzo Dow Baker grew up right here in Wellfleet, surrounded by the salty air and rugged coastline of Cape Cod. Like many from the area, Baker turned to the sea at a young age, starting his career as a sailor. But it was one fateful voyage in 1870 that would change not only his life, but the way America eats.
While captaining a schooner to Jamaica, Baker saw an opportunity in the island’s strange, sweet fruit: bananas. At the time, bananas were almost unknown in the U.S., and considered exotic delicacies. Sensing their potential, Baker loaded up his ship with 160 bunches and sailed them back to Jersey City. Despite the long journey, the bananas sold quickly and for a profit, sparking the beginning of a booming trade.
What started as a single haul soon grew into a thriving business. Baker continued to import bananas, eventually co-founding what would become the United Fruit Company — a name that would shape the global banana industry for decades.
But through it all, Wellfleet remained a part of Baker’s story. He returned here often and kept ties to the community, even as his business took him across oceans and into the history books. His success story is a testament to the bold spirit of Cape Codders: adventurous, entrepreneurial, and unafraid to chart new waters.
Today, it’s easy to forget how exotic and rare bananas once were — or that their rise to popularity began with a Wellfleet mariner’s keen eye and salty instincts. So next time you enjoy a banana, take a moment to remember Lorenzo Dow Baker: the man from Wellfleet who brought the tropics to America.
